Course-specific policies
Collaboration
- Labs, quizzes, and Canvas exit surveys/check-ins are individual work.
- Projects may be completed individually or in teams of up to 2.
- High-level discussion with classmates is fine, but do not share lab code,
filled-in tables, or polished written answers.
- Arena submissions and private feedback may not be shared before
the final submission closes.
- Every submitted assignment should clearly list permitted collaborators.
Use of GenAI
Generative AI tools may be used for brainstorming, debugging, or polishing, but they do not replace understanding.
- You remain responsible for correctness, citations, privacy, and policy compliance.
- Do not paste private course materials or sensitive data into external tools unless explicitly permitted.
- If GenAI materially shaped a lab submission, include an AI Decision Ledger
covering 3-5 consequential decisions. Project ledgers use 5-10 entries. For
each, record the suggestion received, how it was checked, and what was
decided. Complete chat transcripts are not required.
- Quizzes must be completed without GenAI.
- During the Lab 2 arena, systems may use only the model interface and resource
budget supplied for the lab.
Quizzes
- Both quizzes are completed during class, on paper, and individually.
- Quizzes are closed book and closed notes. Computers, phones, AI tools, and
other electronic aids may not be used.
- Each quiz includes foundation and application questions plus longer
certify-or-refute reasoning questions. An instructor-supplied formula sheet
and a practice set will be provided before each quiz.
- Coverage and any other permitted basic supplies will be announced before each
quiz.
- An approved absence receives an equivalent makeup arrangement. A makeup may
use different examples while assessing the same skills.
Exit surveys and check-ins
- Short individual exit surveys and check-ins submitted through Canvas
contribute 10% of the course grade.
- A check-in may ask for a conclusion, remaining question, interpretation of a
small result, or progress update on a current lab or project.
- Check-ins receive credit for timely, good-faith completion.
- Contact the instructor about an extended absence.
Late work
- Each student has 3 late days for the semester.
- Late days may be used on Labs 1 and 3 and the project proposal.
- No more than 2 late days may be used on a single assignment.
- Late days may not be used for quizzes, the synchronized Lab 2 arena
submission, the in-class project pitch, the Lab 4 individual oral check, the
poster/demo session, final reports, or end-of-semester deadlines.
- If you have a documented conflict or a serious issue, contact the instructor as early as possible.
Regrades
- Regrade requests must be submitted within 7 days after a grade is released and
may result in review of the entire submission.
- The result of a regrade request for a project team submission applies to the
full team.
Project contributions
- Teams must include a short contribution statement for every project milestone.
- Shared grades are the default, but substantial contribution imbalances may lead to adjustments.
Lab 2 arena conduct
- Arena work must stay within the published lab interface, privacy budget, and
resource limits.
- Deliberate malware, persistence, resource exhaustion, credential access, and
attempts to retrieve private grading material are prohibited.
- Students may not attempt to retrieve private arena data, hidden workloads,
evaluator code, or another student’s submission.
- Private feedback and another student’s artifacts may not be redistributed.
University policies and resources
The links below point to current UVA sources. If a summary on this page
conflicts with University policy, the official policy controls.
Academic integrity
Students are subject to UVA’s Honor Code
and official guidance on academic fraud.
The course-specific collaboration and GenAI rules above explain how those
expectations apply to this course. Ask before submitting if a permitted boundary
is unclear.
Academic accommodations
Section 6 of UVA policy
PROV-008: Teaching Courses for Academic Credit
governs academic accommodations for disability, pregnancy, and religion.
Students should contact the instructor as early as possible so appropriate
accommodations can be arranged and implemented in the course.
Discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and sexual misconduct
The applicable University policies are
HRM-009,
HRM-010, and
HRM-041. The instructor and any
TAs are Responsible Employees under
HRM-040 and cannot promise
confidentiality for disclosures that University policy requires them to report.
For current reporting options, confidential resources, and an explanation of
these obligations, see the official EOCR syllabus statement
and Just Report It.
Your career development path may take you beyond UVA for an internship interview
or a technical conference. If you notify the instructor at least one week in
advance of such an event, you may choose either:
- completing assignments remotely; or
- delaying assignment, exam, or quiz dates until at least 48 hours after your
return.
Extensions will not normally be granted for a project team activity when only
one member is traveling, and no delay will extend beyond the last day of finals
for the semester.
